The Best Toys and Books for a Four Month Old Baby

by Meghan Yost

Seeing a baby learn and play is one of the most magical things a parent can experience. There’s nothing better than watching them hold a new toy in their hands and examine it, or squeal with delight at seeing it light up and play music.

But it can also be a guessing game figuring out what your baby loves, especially since they’re constantly growing and changing. What seemed like a dud last month can now be the best thing since sliced bread. That’s why I put together a list of the best toys for a four month old baby.

These are the things my daughter Grace loves, and hopefully yours will too!

THE OTTEROO

One of the best toys for a four month old baby is the Otteroo. It’s a great way to make bath time even more fun than it already is. The inflatable ring snaps around baby’s neck and features a chin rest. It allows a baby to move their body freely in a tub filled up with water, or even a pool.

Grace absolutely loves it. We use it about once a week as a treat.

An important note, just as anytime water is involved, it’s incredibly important to be super careful when using the Otteroo. I watch Grace like a hawk while she’s using it, and the one time we did use it in the pool, we made sure the water was super calm and there were no kids splashing around.

COOKIE BOARD BOOK (SESAME STREET FRIENDS)

This board book features bright, high contrast colors that four month olds love to look at. It’s also about Sesame Street’a lovable monster … Although since they dropped that word from the title, is he now referred to as only “Cookie?” Whatever the case may be, Grace looks looking at and touching the pages of this book. The first time she saw it she squealed with delight.

GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU SOFT TEETHER BOOK

A teether and book in one. What could be better than that? For my little four month old, nothing. Grace loves sticking the rubber spine in her mouth and “flipping” through the pages of this book, i.e. smushing them in her hands and all over her face. The book did come with a little string and rubber ring attached to it but I cut it off. It seemed like a strangulation hazard to this mama bear. 🤷🏼‍♀️ …Or maybe it serves a purpose (??) Please let me know if it does in case I get another book like it. 😂

THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR 50TH BIRTHDAY PLUSH

The Hungry Caterpillar is celebrating 50 years and this is the special edition version of the plush toy. Grace loves holding the caterpillar in her hands and looking at the bright colors. I tell her all of the different colors on the caterpillar and “walk” it up her body from her toes to her head. She also just loves to hold it and smush it in her face.

INFANTINO GO GAGA! ANIMAL PARADE LINKS

These links aren’t a toy, per say, but they make play time more fun. They allow you to hang toys from a play mat, chair, etc. I often use them to lower toys so Grace can more easily reach them with her hands or feet.

BRIGHT STARTS TUMMY TIME PROP & PLAY MAT

Tummy time is so important for a baby’s development and this plush mat makes it fun. It has a pillow to prop up baby and also features taggies for them to grab, a mirror, rattle and other interesting toys.

BUNNIES BY THE BAY BLOSSOM BUNNY BUDDY BLANKET

I run the blanket portion of this soft bunny over Grace’s face and she loves it. I’ll also tie the ears to a ring and hang it from Grace’s play mat so she can grab at it. (I find if I just give her the bunny straight up it usually ends up stuck on her face, so I never give it to her without watching).

POTTERY BARN PLUSH LAMB THUMBIE

I give this plush lamb thumbie to Grace when she is getting sleepy. She loves to hold it and rub it against her face. I’ll also rub it against her cheeks or place it in her hand to help soothe her.

BELLA TUNNO ALWAYS ON VACAY TEETHER

The Bella Tunno Always on Vacay Teether is a great toy for babies who love to chew things. The ring of round balls helps massage a baby’s gums and I love the pink design. Plus, who doesn’t want to be, “Always on vacay?” That’s what makes this one of the best toys for a four month old baby.

BABY EINSTEIN TAKE ALONG TUNES

Tummy time isn’t an activity itself, but a position, so it’s critical to keep baby entertained when they’re working on their head and neck muscles. That’s where this toy comes in. It plays classical melodies, baby style. When Grace is on her tummy, I move it side-to-side in front of her as well as up and down to help her move her head in different directions. She is mesmerized by the music and flashing lights.

INFANTINO GO GAGA! MUSICAL TRAVEL BAR ACTIVITY TOY

This activity bar is one of the best toys for a four month old baby. Hang this toy across a play mat, stroller or car seat to keep baby entertained. It features spinning animals – one that lights up and plays music. It also has different textures, rings and ribbons, as well as a mirror. I’m a little hesitant to use it in the car for fear it will hit Grace’s face in a worst-case scenario, but we use it often while she’s lying on her play mat.
